The Local Area

The Town

Cricklade is a Saxon town on the banks of the River Thames, just outside the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With 112 listed buildings and protected meadowlands the traditional market town is well worth exploring for the curious. Cricklade has everything for the perfect escape; country pubs, cafes, local shops and supermarket, all within walking distance of the house.

Restaurants and Pubs

The Red Lion Inn has been a Cricklade staple since the early 1600’s and is a literally a stones throw from Little Cottage. They have an onsite brewery and provide a wide variety of pub food including a Sunday roast. Further up the High Street there are several more pubs and restaurants including the excellent Cricklade Club which, on top of being a good place to eat, hosts live music.

Nearby Walks

North Meadow, a National Nature Reserve, is right on the doorstep of the cottage and is a good place for walks of various lengths. The reserve is a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to its wide variety of wildflowers which includes snake’s head fritillaries; a nationally scarce flower that blooms around mid-April. Blakehill Farm - a former airfield being turned back into a wildlife-rich conservation area - is 2-miles west of Cricklade.

Cotswolds & Local Area

Cirencester, the capital of the Cotswolds, is a 10 minute drive from Cricklade. From there explore the open countryside with countless walks and areas to ramble, two of the best known being The Cotswold Way and The Winchcombe Way. The Cotswold Water Park is also nearby, and offers a range of activities including angling, birdwatching and water sports. National cycle Route 45 passes the front door of Little Cottage.
